Tony Towndrow’s journey from the Air Force to the Border Patrol and ultimately to becoming a wellness-focused adventure coach is an inspiring story of resilience, growth, and transformation. With a background rooted in family military tradition, Tony found purpose in service. Today, he has redefined that purpose through a unique coaching business that blends outdoor adventure with wellness, catering to veterans, first responders, and those dealing with secondary trauma. Here’s a look at Tony’s journey and the life lessons he’s learned along the way.
The Call to Serve: A Family Tradition
Growing up in a military family, Tony always knew he wanted to serve. With his mom in the Air Force, his dad in the Navy, his grandfather in the Marines, and uncles in the Army, joining the military felt like a natural path. Straight out of high school, he enlisted in the Air Force, choosing a career in security forces—a role that blended law enforcement with base security. At just 18 years old, he was thrust into high-stakes responsibilities, learning discipline and professionalism through his work.
“One thing in the military that I see so often, regardless of the branch, is that you’re given an immense amount of responsibility really quickly,” Tony shared. For him, this rapid push toward growth and professionalism was both an eye-opener and a valuable foundation for the years ahead.
Facing the Challenges of Military Service
During his ten years of active duty, Tony served in various locations worldwide, including combat deployments in Iraq in 2004 and 2006. By the time he reached the ten-year mark, he was feeling the toll that military life had taken. “I was burnt out,” he admitted. Despite the encouragement from others to complete his service, Tony knew he needed a change.
Around this time, Tony’s fiancée encountered a Border Patrol recruiter at her college. Although she wasn’t interested, she mentioned it to Tony, who was intrigued by the possibilities. The recruiter, a former Air Force member himself, gave Tony an honest overview of the role. Soon after, Tony found himself making the transition from active duty in the Air Force to the Border Patrol Academy, where his background in security forces allowed him to start as a GS-9.
Adjusting to Civilian Life in Law Enforcement
While the Border Patrol role provided a sense of continuity, the culture shift was jarring. Tony was used to the military’s discipline and structure, but in his new job, he was surrounded by people from various backgrounds, many of whom had no military experience. “It was kind of a culture shock for me at first,” Tony said. He found himself adjusting to an environment where camaraderie wasn’t as deeply ingrained as it had been in the Air Force.
For Tony, the transition was not only about adapting to a new work culture but also about rediscovering his purpose. “The hardest thing people struggle with is finding that purpose,” he reflected. “I had something lined up, but even then, I felt the difference.” This period highlighted the challenge veterans face in finding a path that resonates with them after leaving the military.
Leveraging VA Benefits for a Smooth Transition
Fortunately, Tony was able to utilize his VA benefits, specifically the GI Bill, to ease his transition. As a Border Patrol trainee, he spent a full year in training, with five months at the academy and additional on-the-job training. His GI Bill benefits helped supplement his income during this period, as his initial pay was lower than his active-duty salary.
Tony’s experience underscores the importance of veterans taking advantage of their benefits early on. He didn’t file for his VA benefits until a few years after his transition, a delay he wishes he could have avoided. “More people need to understand that they should do it right away,” he advised, highlighting how VA benefits can provide a financial cushion and peace of mind during the often-turbulent transition period.
Rediscovering Purpose Through Adventure and Wellness
After nearly nine years with the Border Patrol, Tony found himself facing burnout and struggling to cope with the stress of his role. Instead of seeking help, he initially turned to substance abuse, fearing stigma and potential repercussions on his career. Eventually, he chose to step away, becoming a stay-at-home dad for 18 months—a role he describes as “by far the hardest job” he’d ever undertaken.
During this time, Tony began exploring outdoor activities as a way to find balance and purpose. He took a part-time job as a professional outdoor sports guide, leading clients on hiking, biking, and climbing excursions. The experience was transformative. “Complete strangers would open up to me about their life struggles on the trail,” he recalled. This was when Tony realized that outdoor adventure could serve as a powerful tool for healing and personal growth.
Building a New Career in Adventure Coaching
Inspired by his experiences, Tony decided to formalize his passion into a business that combined outdoor adventure with wellness coaching. He completed a bachelor’s degree in adventure education at Prescott College and later pursued a master’s in adventure wellness coaching. Throughout his studies, he focused on developing a program that would bring together experiential learning, wellness practices, and the therapeutic benefits of nature.
Today, Tony is a certified adventure wellness coach, accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF). His business, now certified as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business, offers “therapeutic adventures” for veterans, first responders, and behavioral health professionals—people who often encounter secondary trauma in their roles. These guided outdoor experiences, which include hikes, bike rides, and eventually rock climbing, are designed to help clients connect with nature, release stress, and gain clarity.
Offering a Unique Approach to Wellness
Tony’s approach to coaching is as much about reconnecting with nature as it is about personal growth. Clients meet with him twice a month for virtual sessions, where they discuss goals, set action plans, and work through challenges. Once a month, Tony takes clients outdoors, facilitating conversations that help them tap into their potential while finding peace in natural surroundings.
“We’ll go out, we’ll meditate halfway through, and we’ll have conversations about wellness practices,” he explained. For clients, it’s an opportunity to find a release valve for the stress of their jobs while learning practices they can incorporate into their daily lives.
A Therapeutic Alternative for Those in High-Stress Professions
Tony’s work is especially suited for those who might be reluctant to seek help through traditional talk therapy or counseling. He describes his sessions as “therapeutic adventures”—not therapy per se, but experiences that provide a therapeutic benefit. For people in high-stress professions, such as veterans, first responders, and behavioral health workers, the appeal lies in the combination of nature, movement, and meaningful conversation.
“I help people who are dealing with burnout or trauma reconnect with themselves in a way that’s engaging and uplifting,” Tony said. By facilitating these experiences, he hopes to provide others with the tools he wished he’d had during his own struggles.
Finding Fulfillment Through Service Once Again
Tony’s journey has brought him full circle, from military service to law enforcement, and now back to a form of service rooted in compassion and connection. His new venture has given him a renewed sense of purpose, allowing him to make a positive impact on the lives of others while honoring his own journey of growth.
For those feeling lost or burnt out, Tony’s story is a reminder that it’s possible to find purpose again—even if it means forging a new path. By blending adventure, wellness, and coaching, he has created a unique service that not only serves others but also continues to help him heal and grow.
For veterans, first responders, and professionals dealing with secondary trauma, Tony Towndrow’s adventure wellness coaching offers a chance to find relief, reconnect with nature, and reclaim a sense of balance. In a world increasingly dominated by screens and stress, Tony’s therapeutic adventures invite us all to step outside, take a breath, and rediscover what truly matters.
